Regulations and labeling requirements for microbial control products and technologies are constantly changing at different rates across the globe. This situation makes it increasingly difficult for formulators to remain up-to-date.
Developed countries manage product regulations in different ways in order to protect human health and the environment. In the United States for example, antimicrobials must be registered under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA); conventional chemicals are subject to regulation under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA); and products used in high-level disinfectants, food and personal care applications are subject to regulation under the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetics Act (FFDCA).
In Europe, products must meet the requirements of the EU’s Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) – (EU) No 528/2012, along with the ongoing requirement to register products at a country level. In addition, there are requirements under REACH, the European Union regulation for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals which apply to some DuPont Microbial Control products as well.
For the rest of world, countries have their own regulations governing the use of biocides. In some instances they will rely on the biocides to have EU BPR / US EPA approval.
